TABLE LAMP XI – EVOLUTION Lamp is made of senegalese calabash. Pattern was inspired by fractals, nature and evolution. White carvings are deeper layer of white wood which allows some light to pass through it. Perforation is made by drills in 10 different diameters. The base is carved in wood and finished with natural italian natural oil. The supporting 'stem' is finished off with black jeweller waxed string. On the underneath side of the base is burned Calabarte logo. Diameter of the gourd is 22 cm, and lamp is 39 cm high. Lamp was finished in March 2011.
I love the patterns the light from this one makes on the walls.
I've been wondering for a while: How tough is gourd wood? It seems like it would have to be pretty strong to support all the little details in the cut-out parts.
Thank You. The outer surface of gourd is more tough. The deeper white wood is a little softer. I dont have to much experience in carving in wood so I dont have comparison. I think gourd wood is optimal for working on it but also quite delicate. It depends of thickness also. Most of my gourds are about 4-5mm)
